France Vs South Africa

Rob Kenyon, who represents not only Old World wines, but “New World” Old World wines will host our friendly battle between France and South Africa.

In one corner, you have France.  The oldest of the “old world”, with its hyper focus on terroir driven flavors, and an extreme dedication to wine traditions dating back to the 6th century.  Many of the common varietals we know today like Cabernet, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah, were sourced from France and now are planted world wide.  Their winemaking and wine culture has influenced almost every wine drinker in the world.

In the other corner, we have South Africa, a “relative” newcomer (they’ve only been making wine since 1659).  But for most of the 20th century, South African wines were basically nonexistent on the international market.  But the end of Apartheid brought an international flair to their winemaking, with influence from France, Spain, Portugal and California.

Rob will take you through several different varietals such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah, with examples from each country, to compare and contrast the differences in style and taste.

We will sample at least six wines.
