Product Description

Bacchus welcomes the Christmas season with something soft, lush and South American.

The 2017 Zuccardi Concreto Malbec – a block buster 96-point, No. 10 Wine Enthusiast of the Year wine is a great way to get Bacchus into Cyber Monday.

Our critic friends climbed over each other trying to post glowing reviews, so here they are:

James Suckling, 96 Points: “This is a unique wine for Mendoza with a cool-fruit and serious slate character. Undertones of dried herbs and bark. Full body, integrated fruit and tannins. Wet earth, too. Reminds me of the reds in Spain’s Galicia, but so new in Argentina. Drink now but better in 2020.”

Robert Parker, 94 Points: “The aromatic expression of the 2017 Concreto Malbec is completely different from the 2016. This is a lot more open, floral and gentle, with a more polished and sleek palate with more integrated acidity. A wine of tremendous energy, it was kept in concrete all its life (hence the name) until it was bottled.”

Wine Enthusiast, 93 Points: “Calm and pure blackberry and cassis aromas feed into an intense palate with freshness and rubbery tannins. While not loud, this goes heavy on the gas and features edgy dark-berry flavors. A rock-solid finish confirms the structure on this cement-fermented-and-aged Malbec from Paraje Altamira in the Uco Valley. Drink through 2025.”

But what does it mean for you? Malbec is a friendly grape – its roots are in Cahors, France where Malbec is used as a blending grape to give lush and earthy character to the sometimes bitingly tight Cabs and Merlots.

A wine of this magnitude you would think gets oak aging, but instead the winemakers wanted the purity of fruit to remain. Using whole cluster fermentation (a process in which grapes, seeds and stems are put into a vat, generally sealed, for fermentation), the process completed in concrete results in more floral, spicy and earthy personality – as noted by the critics – and for the better.

Bacchus’ notes: Gulpable and glyceryl wine, not quite a tooth-stainer nor assaultive, but lip smacking and long lasting. Bacchus is a great fan of wines that holdup long after the mouthful has left the arena.

Obviously, if you are reading this, and this happens to be in the Monday Morning Bacchus column – it is a winner and priced better than you could expect.

Sadly, at 96 points – it is somewhat limited, but we are searching the known wine world for extra cases because the price is too good to pass up.

Happy Cyber Monday!
