Product Description

Bacchus is crowing about this week’s All American Californian Chardonnay, getting an exceptional vintage at a don’t-ask-questions price.

The 2017 The Calling Dutton Ranch Chardonnay is nestled in the foggy banks of the Russian River Valley heading west towards Bodega Bay and the Pacific Ocean.

Bacchus knows this appellation, having spent several years visiting and traveling this heart of Sonoma.

Chardonnay is the leading grape out here – the area is cool, not cold, with fog a constant, seems like the perfect weather for a cool climate grape.

In the growing season, warm daytime temperatures plummet when fog regularly intrudes from the Petaluma Gap to the south, and the Russian River to the west. The northern border marks the point where the fog frequently sticks around a while longer in the morning, while Alexander Valley is already heating up.

Dutton Ranch is large enough to keep a foot in both the chilly side and warm side of Sonoma Valley. The winemakers see this as a spectacular opportunity to bring the tropical fruity elements from the warmer side and blend with the crispy, minerally harvest from the cooler end.

Together, they put together a succulent, mellow fruit style with the added stiffness of acidity.

This wine is so tasty – you can’t help but marvel at the opening aromas, full bore lemon meringue, baked pear, light blossoms, followed by a palate of crispy acidity, green apple and a thoroughly refreshing cleansing brace.

Wines made like this aren’t cheap, and we wouldn’t expect them to be — the grapes are hand harvested, spend nearly a year in French oak, about a third of them new, native yeast is used to keep flavors dazzling.

It’s a wine to bring to someone’s house when you want to impress (and hope they open the bottle with you there). You can also tell them that this wine is produced by Jim Nantz, the famed sportscaster — and in the previous vintage, The Calling was ranked #15 Wine of the Year by Wine Enthusiast.

As Bacchus is fond of preaching, you can love both the sharp as steel Chablis – and the glorious and glycerol Californian Chardonnay equally.

And today, we are loving us some Dutton Ranch “The Calling.”
