Product Description

Bacchus likes to play mixologist when suppliers bring various varietals into his den to taste; “How’d this bit of Viognier taste in the Cab Franc?” he would ponder to his amusement.

But,he didn’t have to do any work on the bottling picked for this week, it was already done for him. The 2016 Two Hands Hopes and Dreams Winemaker’s Red from Australia’s Barossa Valley. What starts out as a traditional Rhone style red, takes a quizzical turn when a tannic and bold Cabernet Sauvignon is added into the mix. So now you have Grenache, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvèdre and Carignan.

The meaty, gamey, berry and spice red gets a dash of tobacco, mint and oak – and a barnburner it is.

We’ve featured a few Two Hands wines before – The Sexy Beast, Bella’s Garden and Gnarly Dudes come to mind. The Winery is irreverent, loves its witty labels and names, but when it comes to making wine, they be deadly serious, mate.

For this bottling, the name comes from the inner road that connects the winery, cellar and vineyards –The Avenue of Hopes and Dreams. In a nutshell, Two Hands was born from a libation-fueled encounter at an engagement party between two friends back in 2000.
In the past decade or so, the production from this Barossa Valley winery has been so spectacular, wine guru Robert Parker called them the “finest négociants south of the equator.” Négociant is an ancient merchants’s term, but its meaning is very different today. Instead of a mere business transaction, today’s négociants are intimately involved in every process of the wine, from soil to vine to grape to harvest to blend to bottle.

Bacchus cracked open the Hopes and Dreams and drunk in the aromatic spicy red berries and floral notes. Given the eclectic blend, it was hard to pinpoint where the oozing layers of spice, cedar, loam, dark fruits were coming from. Was it the Mourvedre? The Cab? The Syrah? Who cares – it all dazzled the palate equally, tinging with oak and tannin.

The Two Hands guys must have been very pleased this wine came out as it did, earning high praise and 90+ ratings. We bemoan the scant quantity.
