Product Description

Bacchus loves breaking news when it comes to wine.

While busily preparing this week’s Monday Morning Bacchus selection, along came this little beauty, new vintage and out for a tour with the supplier.

The 2016 Tenuta Polvaro “Polvaro Nero” from Veneto wasn’t scheduled to be highlighted this week, but its surprisingly powerful showing at introductory price made it a must see.

The Polvaro Nero is framed by a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, international varietals that do well in the Northeastern corner of Italy.

We were grateful that the wine had been opened about four hours prior, so when we got to it, the grapes were singing in harmony, the tightness had dropped off to reveal earthy and commanding characteristics. What do we mean by commanding? This is not a soft, subtle wine – aromas are “brooding,” flavors large, mouthfeel is numbing – in a good way – given that this is a Bordeaux style blend, it does well to represent that good Old World style, still, gobs of fruit jump out. Do we pick up black berries, plums, mocha, earth, loam, cedar? Yes we do.

Polvaro has been producing grapes for about 350 years, taking advantage of the clay soils and southern exposure to develop international style varietals.

The 2016 vintage has earned a Due Bicchieri designation from Gambero Rosso and a Gold Medal in the Italian National Wine Exhibition.

If you’re looking for a great Cab blend, that’s not a syrupy sweet style, but good old fashioned dry and rustic, this is a fantastic choice.

Even at its MSRP, we find this wine’s quality to price ratio a value, but as an introductory offer — even better.
