Product Description

Bacchus relies on this Portuguese estate for a splendid over the top value for this week’s offering.

The 2016 Quinta do Vale Meao Meandro from Douro is the latest version in a lengthy line of 90+ rated wines from some of the finest vineyards in the Douro.

Meandro, as its name suggests, means meander, and refers to the Douro River, from which all good things emanate. Meandro is grown, made and Estate Bottled by the Olazabal family on their 135 year old wine estate in the Douro region of Northern Portugal.

Among this hefty red, they also produce nearly prefect vintage porto. In order to have nearly perfect scores, they need nearly perfect grapes, and any fans of the Quinta can attest that year after year, this estate has delivered.

Besides starting with terrific production of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Alicante Bouschet, Tinta Amarela and Tinta Barroca, the estate also has Francisco Olazabal, the recent Winemaker of the Year in Portugal, and direct descendant of the creator of the property nearly 150 years ago.

A replanting of the estate 40 years ago with superior vines has now paid of for the family. And it shows in the remarkable string of excellent scores from all corners of the wine world.

Undergoing traditional vinification with modern day controls, the wines are exemplary. This is an all around fabulous wine, the deep, dark ancient varietals, which are also used to make Porto, are sourced for this still red wine.

As you can imagine, it is dense, with a staunch ridge of tannins that taper off into velvet mocha cream. Licorice spice, dried plum and earthy notes of black fruits intermingle. The wine is made for consumption now with some time in the carafe, but it has enough stuffing to lay down for several years.

The 2016 vintage in Portugal is rated 92 points, which lands it in the “excellent” range.

At $29.99, the wine is worthy and we would be hard pressed to find similar New World wines in this price range that offer as much.

Today, Bacchus betters that price for the limited amount we have on hand.
