Product Description

Bacchus awoke from his lazy summer haze to a crispy brace of chilly fall air the other day and immediately thought: Thanksgiving.

Time to begin foraging for the best values in fall wines, and first on his list is the 2016 Domaine Saint Nicolas Pinot Noir. This earthy, old vine Pinot hails from an atypical Pinot locale – the southwestern point of the Loire Valley, a breeze away from the Atlantic coast.

Visitors to the Loire know mostly brilliant Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc, chevre and maybe the most gorgeous architectual landscape on earth. Not so much of the Pinot Noir, which is fine with the winery owner, Thierry Michon.

Thierry produces a small amount of very high quality, biodynamically and organically farmed, hand harvested Pinot Noir. For those who follow organic practice, you’ll be pleased to know that Thierry also buys land around his farm as buffer zones and keeps that property, while not under vine, free of any non organic substance.

How driven is he? Get this: he still uses horse and buggy in his vineyards. Red grapes are crushed by foot in foudre.

Given the location near the ocean, the soils of mostly schist, crushed limestone, the reds are minerally and vibrant with tons of dark earth.

Pinot Noir is a fragile grape given to appellation variation – California Pinot can be dark, stewed cherry and plummy, Burgundy can be subtle, floral, cola, leather and spice. The St. Nicolas is bright cherry, truffle and evergreen spices. The nose is pleasing, but the palate is really expressive.

If you’re a fan of the hammer-like New World Pinots that resemble Malbec, this is probably not right for you. But if you like the silkiness, refined nature of a true Old World Pinot Noir, this can be yours for a fraction of a similar wine from Burgundy.

The St. Nicolas, 100% Pinot Noir, has earned 90 points, and is a favorite of wine observers who enjoy keeping this little number a secret that only the cool kids know about.

It’s a handsome bottle of wine and will look and taste great on your holiday table – if you can keep it that long.
