Product Description

Bacchus gives you all you need to know in a nutshell for this next wine: It is labeled a Cote du Rhone yet the vineyard from which it hails sits yards away from Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The soils, wind, temperature, vines, hand harvesting, winemakers are all the same. The only difference is an imaginary boundary between the two farms.

But, that boundary also separates the price by about 30%. The 2017 Domaine de la Janesse Cotes du Rhone Terre d’Argile is farmed on a small, 15 hectare plot of old vines and gravelly, red clay soil – exactly like its more expensive neighbor. Both parcels are owned by the Sabon family and yes, both are harvested, sorted, crushed, aged and bottled the same way and share a cellar.

It is not uncommon for wine aficionados to confuse the Cotes du Rhone with the more expensive Janesse CdP.

The Terre d’Argile hasn’t scored below 91 points in the past eight years, its pedigree and time-honored methods are so consistent. The 2017 is 91 points and is a blend of Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Carignan, Mourvedre – very similar to the combo that shapes many Chateauneuf-du-Papes.

The Janesse is also a cellar selection chosen by Eric Solomon, the seer of majestic Southern French and Spanish wines. Bacchus would drink any wine if the only thing on the label were the name Eric Solomon; red, white or rose – and for whatever price they placed upon it, so sure of its quality to price ratio.

For us, the 2017 is a relative newby, after some tannic attitude upon opening, the Mourvedre refreshed the wine with black fruit earthiness and released the pleasant, valley glen aromas of garrigue and herbs one might experience on a warm summer evening walking the hills around Avignon.

No need to belabor the point, you have heard it so often – Bacchus takes to Rhone reds like a fish to water.

This is no standard Cotes du Rhone appellation red, this is a secret CdP-styled red hiding behind the simple country appellation. At its release price, it might be tough to grab off the shelf, but that’s why we have Bacchus to help us.
