Product Description

Bacchus asks you to remember waaaay back to last week, when he featured the Primus red from Veramonte. Why? Because today’s wine is a cousin, cared for by the same “uncle” that gave us Primus.

Today’s choice, the 2015 Ritual Sauvignon Blanc Casablanca Valley, Chile — the very fine, Mediterranean-like wine growing region in South America that produces some of the best whites south of the equator.

The Ritual, like its close relative, Primus, is overseen by Agustin Huneeus, a master winemaker prone to elevating grapes to levels well above their pay grade. If you remember last week, Huneeus is an exalted member of the world’s wine making fraternity.

Casablanca Valley produces vintage after vintage of ideal weather for grape growing, the 2015 was warmer than previous vintages, so the edge of steel minerality and biting acidity is replaced by a more rounded, fleshy fruit explosion. You’re still in for that crisp, first bite of the fall apple experience, however.

Previous vintages have also resulted in scores ranging from 90 to 96 points, this year, 92 points, and still a great value.

Ritual brings us a vibrant Sauvignon Blanc with intense citrus and floral notes, combined with flavors of white peaches and nectarines. The savory acidity does lead to an impeccable clean smooth finish.

Our friend James Suckling (92 points): “A Sauvignon with a beautiful core of ripe fruit showing dried pear, apple and green mango aromas and flavors. Full body, pretty texture without giving away agility and tension. 30% produced in concrete eggs, 40% used barrels and the rest stainless.”

We just opened a bottle. The fruit is definitely evolving into ripe citrus, but a big surprise, the minerality holds its edge and contributes to a sturdy backbone. For a 2015, this is much more robust and alive then we might have thought.

By all means, continue to drink this well into the year – for the holidays and beyond.

If you were to find this on the shelf earlier this summer, you might have glanced over it, as it is listed in the mid $20s, but there is no reason to ignore it today.
