Product Description

Bacchus has no problem admitting that this week’s wine is absolutely new to him and three weeks ago didn’t even know it existed.

So he talked to the good folks at the winery and found out more about this Rhone style red from the lower half of California.

2015 Margerum M5, from Santa Barbara County, is a blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre and less amounts of Cinsault – all the wonderful varietals found in the South of France.

Tell you more? OK, Margerum is Doug Margerum, a Southern California foodie who’s a major player in the wine and restaurant scene in that area.

He started his boutique winery almost 20 years ago, buying fruit from estate vineyards around Buellton (think “Sideways” territory).

There’s not much of this wine, given the intense hands on approach to the winemaking and sourcing of just the right fruit.

Margerum is a small shop, with distribution outlets in about a dozen states, Massachusetts is one of them. So it would never even be a blip on any market report or trend. It is a hand sell and when shown to Rhone lovers like Bacchus, all it takes is just one sip to be hooked.

The 2015 Margerum is shaped by the berry and floral Grenache supported by the deeply structured and heavily hued Syrah and Mourvedre. Upon opening and allowing the air to reach the rim, wafts of freshly jammed and dried red fruits and berries arise, tinged with anise and pepper. This wine is terrifically made, showing balance and not at all restrained.

From the critics:

92 points Vinous. “The 2015 M5 is a delicious Grenache-based blend. Sweet floral notes, expressive red berries, tobacco, herbs and licorice add nuance, but it is the wine’s silkiness and polish that stand out most.”

91 points Jeb Dunnuck: It has a lively, elegant style as well as classic notes of raspberries, crushed flowers and licorice. Medium-bodied, seamless and supple in the palate, drink this total charmer over the coming 4-5 years.”

Bacchus owns all the remaining 2015 in Massachusetts and is willing to share, reluctantly.
