Product Description

Bacchus heads back to the Old Country for today’s offer, into the Tuscan Hills in the ancient region surrounding Sienna.

The 2015 Castello di Monastero Chianti Superiore from Lionello Marchesi is on the block, this oldish styled Chianti is actually a fairly new property, dating back just 30 years or so, but recreated on a 1000-year-old patch of land at the monastery at Castelnuovo Berardenga, in the heart of Classico Chianti.

Marchesi makes several wines within the Tuscan region, from Brunello to Super Tuscans, using simple techniques and allowing the grapes to show their true expression. For this, the wines have been heralded as authentic and true to their roots.

Today’s offering is the Chianti Superiore, created from the Berardenga vineyards. Marchesi takes mostly Sangiovese, the main component in Chianti, and blends in a little Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. These international grapes add color and structure to the mild mannered Sangiovese.

Once blended, the cuvee is aged seven months in small oak barrels – this is important, as the smaller the barrels, the more intense the aging component is. The result is a fresh wine with hints of vanilla, a touch of oak, cherry and berries.

At four years old, it is within its drinking range, and, as a Superiore, it must spend at least 9 months aging in barrel and bottle. This wine actually ages a full year before release, giving it extra time to meld and mellow.

Bacchus chose this wine because it is a great choice for a house pour when expecting family and friends. It is easy to pair, easy to drink and given the choices of similar priced wines, a better selection.

While this wine is sold on sale by the bottle, we HIGHLY suggest you bulk up, as with graduations and outdoor activities, you will find a case of this comes in handy.
