Bacchus was asked recently if he could find another Bordeaux gem like he did a few weeks ago, which prompts him to alert you good readers – if you are indeed searching for a specific region or style, by all means, let him know! It is not always possible, but more times than not, he can find a worthy version. Like today’s offering.

 

On the heels of the well accepted Chateau Beaumont, Bacchus offers the younger 2014 Haut-Medoc Chateau Pomies-Agassac. Hmm, where have you heard that name – Bordophiles will know the name Chateau d’Agassac – an 800 year old estate in the small village of Ludon-Medoc, within the appellation.

 

The Chateau is what you would expect from a pillar of the Bordeaux world – stately, huge, very old, located on property known for vintage after vintage of award winning grapes. If you looked up the term Bordeaux estate – this is the picture you would find.

 

The Pomies-Agassac is the second label of this estate’s premier bottling. And like the main bottling, this version is guided by the hand of Stephane Denoncourt – a name many oenophiles will recognize. He’s been the master consultant for some of Bordeaux’s greatest wines – Brown, Haut Brion, Lafite, Pavie-Maquin, as well as Napa big guns, too.

 

Let’s take a look under the cork: This wine is deep garnet-red with strong aromas of ripe red fruit. The presence of new oak is evident with a woodsy and spicy aura as well.

 

The wine is tannic up front and needs about an hour to relax, at that point, you’ll pick up the swirling aromas of pepper, plums, eucalyptus. The taste and finish are all well integrated, tannin mingling with minerality to give it brace and make it very suitable for a hearty meal.

 

Bacchus had a chuckle over the serving suggestions made by the winemaker “roasted perch with juniper sauce.” Not quite sure where we can find that, but any medley of roasted meats will do.

 

Our friends in the wine critic world say this:

 

James Suckling: “A rich and intense wine with blackcurrants, tar and berries. Full body. Lots of wet earth character. Big improvement. Range: 91-92.

 

Wine Enthusiast: “The moated fairy-tale castle of Agassac is a showpiece of the Médoc. This wine is structured, juicy and firm. It has dense dry tannins at this stage although the weight of fruit shows it will develop richly. The wine, with its hints of a blackberry future, will be ready to drink from 2020. 91 points.”

 

We beg to differ with the Wine Enthusiast, indeed, it is tight upon opening, but a good hour or so in the carafe is well suited for approaching now. And yet, putting a few bottles in the cellar for future use is a very good idea!
