Product Description

Bacchus doesn’t usually get to offer wines from South Africa, they are somewhat limited, especially the really good ones, and rarely do they hang around long enough to be bartered.

Today, he was pleased to see a stunning Chardonnay from a very good producer pop up on his radar. The 2014 Chamonix Reserve.

The farm that produces the wine – and farm is the proper term to use when referring to South African vineyards, is situated high above the Franschhoek Valley – admittedly, not a familiar name to most wine enthusiasts – but take our word for it, it is a good place.

Here, the producers do all the right things when farming and making wine. The climate is right – hot summers with cold breezes, clay rich soil to add to the wine’s personality, organic mulch, minimal intervention – taking what the good earth gives – letting the wine express itself. As we all know, that is a two-edged sword. When it works, wines are mesmerizing, when it doesn’t, well, there’s always next year.

The 2014 was a hit – earning praise from international critics – ranging in scores from 91 to 97 points. And, as the wine is built to reach maturity in four years – it is just about ready to go.

Bacchus always appreciates what South African Chardonnays are like – he compares the flavor to powdered lemon drops – bright citrus fruit with subtle sweetness, yet staunch acidity. This Chardonnay has much more complexity than that however.

Critics agree this could take its place among premium white Burgundy – indeed the prices reflect that. The Chamonix displays bright yellow colors with aromas of lemon-lime, tropical fruits and kitchen spices. The four years have added a tinge of mellow to it as well.

If you opened this wine under the label Meursault, you would be pleased and the price would be a great value. Bacchus is willing to give you that experience – without the French label, and without the accompanying price.

But it is South African, which means, very limited. Please act quickly, this is one and done, only a few cases remain and then it is gone forever.
