Product Description

Bacchus always remembered that some of the best Chardonnay from South Africa frequently possess that powdered sugar on a lemon drop candy kind of aroma.
The 2014 Bartinney Chardonnay from Stellenbosch is no different. One way to categorize Chardonnay is to put into one of two camps: California buttery and lush, or French Burgundy, crispy, fruity and sublime.
The Bartinney is neither and both. That’s Bacchus’ way of stating that the wine has its own personality, one that while using some of the techniques of both the Old and New world, results in a wine specific to its region. Stellenbosch is among the oldest wine producing regions in the world yet is still considered a New World production. While Stellenbosch is more famously noted for its reds, the white varietals are planted closer to the ocean where they enjoy cooling breezes and terrific bouts of long sunshine – this provides the hangtime white grapes need to create dazzling aromas and maturity.
The judicious use of neutral oak, the lack of malo lactic fermentation downplays any sweetness and caramel, allowing the wine to gracefully age and reveal true crispy fruit flavors.
Our own tasting shows a distinct color and wildly pleasant pear and pineapple aroma. The acidity is refreshing and easily elevates its status as a go-to white for dining on shellfish or any seafood. It’s almost like a Chablis with some of that California sun baked in.
We liked this a lot and tried to buy all that was left.
Apparently, wine critics also enjoyed it, as the Wine Advocate’s Robert Parker dropped 91 points on this vintage: “The 2014 Chardonnay comes from three hectares of vine, although two more are planted. It is matured in around one-third new oak, with minimal toasting on the barrels and no malo. It has a well-defined, quite tightly controlled and linear nose with touches of white peach and fresh pear. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity that is nicely balanced with a brush of wild honey and brioche towards the finish. This is a well made and quite delicious Stellenbosch Chardonnay.”
We liked how he said “quite delicious, because that is what we said too.
We saw this wine on line at some highly outrageous price. Our regular price is less than that, then you get to Bacchusize it.
