Product Description

Bacchus is amused by what some winemakers do to rationalize the naming of a wine.

The 2013 Pitagora Red Blend from Sonoma is such a wine.

Pitagora is the Italian translation of the name Pythagoras – the Greek mathematician and musician. This wine, from the vineyards of Francis Ford Coppola, bears the name Pitagora because it reflects the art and science influence on the Coppola family – there can be no doubt the achievements of the Coppolas in the world of art. And Coppola’s grandfather grew up playing in a school built by Pythagoras, so there is that.

So be it, this is the name chosen – and by the way, the bottle is fairly handsome, then let’s go with it and see what the actual wine is like.

This blend is why we buy California wines. Harvested from the cool climates of Sonoma County, the wines are aromatic, succulent, spicy and well integrated.

It’s a vast blend of the choicest varietals – and some very expensive fruits: Petite Sirah, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot. Selected lots were aged in a combination of French and American oak for 15 months, with the blended wine aged for 6 months.

As we head into the fall, this wine is rich and ripe – perfect for more contemplative sipping and enjoyment. At first approach, the kitchen spices are intense, then joined by black and blueberry fruits, some toasty oak and just a touch of earthiness. For a wine of this age, the abundance of fruit is surprising, this wine could age even longer, but we think at five years, it is at peak. And the flavor lasts all day – it is not shy.

Pitagora is harvested from Sonoma Coast, Dry Creek and Alexander Valley – all primo appellations, and all Coppola fruit.

This sells all day for about $30, but it won’t be that price on Labor Day.
