Product Description

Bacchus always saves his Big Gun wine for this week.

The wine has to have a presence on the holiday table, and the provider needs to know that they not only improved the level of wine drinking, but they did so without the soul crushing realization that they broke the bank in doing so.

So, for the 2018 Christmas holiday, we present the 2012 Siro Pacenti Brunello di Montalcino Vecchie Vigne.

First off, Brunello is welcome anytime, but especially during the holidays. The rich, Sangiovese grosso clone grown only on the hilltop town of Montalcino is a special wine of ethereal aromatics, long, subtle finishes, bringing decadent flavor to any food it is paired with.

Why the Siro Pacenti? This particular estate is fairly new in the world of wine, only about 50 years old, but its soils, exposure and old vines produce wine that generally earns anywhere from 90 to 100 points each year from critics. During periods of stress (which is good for grapes) old vines do better and produce great wine – Vecchie Vigne means Old Vine.

Part of the reason for this estate’s success is the collaboration with Bordeaux oenologist to take the guesswork out of grape maturity. The winemakers have been able to pick grapes at the height of maturity – gaining every drop of flavor without missing the window of opportunity. This provides, year after year, wines of impeccable flavor and fruit maturity.

2012’s vintage was hot, which resulted in smaller grapes and smaller yields, a plus for Sangiovese, smaller berries are preferable as this is a finesse grape, and berries too big result in overly alcoholic and syrupy sweet wine.

The critics agree:

James Suckling. 95 Points. “Aromas of ripe fruit such as sweet strawberry and hints of orange peel and chocolate. Medium to full body, soft and velvety tannins and a flavorful finish. Riper style. Drink or hold.”

The Wine Advocate 94+ points. “Giancarlo Pacenti knows his land well and is a skillful farmer, especially with regards to navigating a challenging vintage like this. The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Vecchie Vigne boasts a beautifully saturated ruby color that appears healthy and bright. The aromas are presented with precision and balance. A wine like this offers irrefutable evidence that old vines are the best remedy in a hot and dry vintage. The wine’s various elements are intact and focused. Dark cherry, candied plum, exotic spice, tar and licorice form a united front. I prefer this vintage to 2011.”

Wine Spectator 93 Points: This is full of cherry and plum flavors, accented by leather, tobacco and iron notes. Solidly structured and taut, balanced and long, with a dense mix of fruit, mineral, spice and tannins on the finish. Best from 2022 through 2036.”

There you have it, along with Bacchus’ personal delight and appreciation for this wine – indeed, among his top 5 Brunellos of all time.
