Product Description

Bacchus does not hide his love of Old World wines, especially aged Rioja from Spain.

The 2011 Baron d’Anglada Reserva popped up on his radar and a sampling brought him back to his days hoofing it around Logrono, the city in the heart of La Rioja. Evenings of wandering the allies in the old city center, jammed with Spaniards and tourists mobbing into the endless taperias, sampling small bites and ridiculously delicious Rioja costing less than a can of Coke.

The true sense of Rioja’s main grape, Tempranillo, is found in the Baron – along with a supporting cast of Mazuello and Graciano – a harmonious wine, round, attractive dark cherry color, with aromas of fresh fruit, roasted game and coffee. Recommended for drinking from 2018 and beyond, the wine is now velvety and meant for Tapas – grilled mushrooms, bits of charred meat, roast chicken, even flatbread pizza with grated Manchego.

A wine like this is not typically found in homes in these parts – for one, the Baron ONLY makes this Reserva in which the crop is exceptional – thus the 2011 may be the only vintage available in the USA.

But, being Rioja Reserva, almost anything made this century is well worth finding.

The Baron hits all the right notes – aged gracefully; true Old World in style with balance, subtle tannins and still tangy enough for food; tiny production (less than 1600 cases made); aged two years in French oak – and most importantly, tastes great.

With limited amounts, not bearing the name of more well-known Rioja, and being pricey, it is not hard to see why this wine might be overlooked. A small cadre of believers do search this wine out, however.

Luckily, we got to the final 10 cases before they did.

Bacchus extends an invitation to Old World aficionados and all interested comers for the Baron to take the final nine cases (one case is headed to Bacchus’ personal cellar).
